A Great Cloud of Witnesses - Abel, Enoch, and Noah: Part 2 of 13

Preview: Faith heroes. Part two of a thirteen-part series of lessons on this subject.


Scripture Reading: Hebrews 11:1-7.

Memory Verse: Hebrews 11:13.

1. Discuss from the foregoing Scriptures how faith enabled Abel, Enoch, and Noah to witness to us today even though they are dead.
2. Let us consider the witness of Abel:
    A. Who was he? Genesis 4:1-2.
    B. How did he show his faith? Genesis 4:3-4, Matthew 23:34-35, I John 3:11-12.
    C. How is he still witnessing even though he is dead? Genesis 4:8-9, Hebrews 11:4.
Note: Abel was the second son of Adam and Eve. He was the first shepherd. His most important attribute was that he was righteous. He loved and obeyed God. His example is still witnessing to us today.
3. How did John imply that Abel loved his unlovable brother? I John 3:10-15, I John 3:23.
Note: Let us commit ourselves to God so that our witness will also be love in action.
4. Consider Enoch:
    A. Who was he? Genesis 4:17, Genesis 5:21-24.
    B. How did he please God? Hebrews 11:5-6.
    C. Was he a prophet of righteousness? Jude 1:5-11, Jude 1:14-16.
Note: Enoch was the son of Cain, a man who out of hate killed his own brother, yet his son was a prophet of righteousness. His faith and obedience was so great that he walked with God and did not experience death. Today, our society excuses all kinds of bad behavior because of one’s background.
    D. What was the secret of his relationship with God? Jude 1:12-16, Jude 1:19-21.
Note: Just as Enoch avoided fellowship with sinful men by keeping close to God, we also are instructed to do likewise, being living witnesses to others that they might also be saved.
5. Consider Noah.
    A. Who was Noah? Genesis 5:28-29, Genesis 5:32.
    B. What was his relationship with God? Genesis 6:8-9.
    C. Who stood with Noah in his devotion to God? Genesis 6:1-7, Genesis 6:11-13.
    D. How did he show his faith and love for God? Genesis 6:14-16, Genesis 6:22.
    E. Why was Noah called a preacher of righteousness? II Peter 2:4-5, Hebrews 11:7.
6. What is our only hope of deliverance? II Peter 2:9.
7. What message must God’s witnesses be proclaiming today? II Peter 2:10-15.
Note: Although the messengers have gone to their rest, the message remains the same. Abel, Enoch, and Noah had no outstanding reason for their call from God except the fact that each of them believed, trusted, and obeyed Him.
